Carnicerías Reales
Description
Overview
This was the slaughterhouse and meat market in the sixteenth century, designed by Francisco del Castillo. The entrance is built in a Mannerist style with an Italian influence: it is framed by two columns of layered stone slabs, leading to a triangular lintel broken by a curved indent in its centre, and crowned by pinnacles which balance on stone globes. The building is square in design, with a central galleried patio, its half-rounded arches resting on stone pillars with a marked rustic character, and a tower in each corner. An impressive spiral stone staircase leads down to the lower level, where the animals were slaughtered.
