La Puente Llovía
Description
Overview
This gate, which we can date at the second half of the fifteenth century, was not part of the fortifications of the mediaeval town, but belonged to a flour mill, whose water channel had to bridge a public footpath below: to allow this, a vaulted walkway was built, surmounted by a decorative arch — a pointed design with stepped cornerstones. The entire structure is made of limestone blocks, making use here and there of the natural underlying rock. It is of great historic value, representing the sole example of important civic architecture which is preserved in the town centre. It marks the beginning of a public walkway which winds along the lower Adarve, and emerges in the Puerta del Sol in the Old Quarter.
