Description

Overview

This house in Carrera de las Monjas is a mansion in the Andalucían style, of a large patio with porticoes and modernist decoration, a living reminder of the painter’s work. It also houses the Local History Museum and the collection of Spanish landscape art.
Founded in 1999, the museum is on the first and second floors of the former home of the Calvo Lozano family, who donated it to Priego de Córdoba in 1985.
Adolfo Lozano Sidro was born in Priego in 1872, studied in Málaga with José Moreno Carbonero, and settled in Madrid towards the end of the nineteenth century. He was considered one of the greatest illustrators of his age, and published most of his work in the magazine “Blanco y Negro”.
The museum displays more than 70 original canvases by the painter, and a generous collection of drawings and sketches. On the first floor, as well as a selection of portraits and paintings with oriental and religious themes, there is a series of illustrations representing everyday scenes and characters typical of Andalucía in the early part of the twentieth century, a sharp contrast to the portraits of high society and life in the salons and theatres of Madrid. Works to look out for are “A Carnival Scene”, “At The Priego Fair”, or “Café Conversation”, which can be seen on the staircase leading to the painter’s studio.
On the second floor, we can visit the rooms used by Lozano Sidro during his visits to Priego. Of particular interest is the studio, where his easels and painting materials, as well as sketches, souvenirs and unfinished works are exhibited -all set up as they were when Lozano Sidro died in 1935-.
